MOTH – 2018 E.P “Spellbound”
label: private
songs: Spellbound / Save Us / We Are The Blessed / Speed Queen //
web: https://moth7.bandcamp.com https://manicmoshmagazine.com/shop.html
London's female fronted act Moth are one of such bands that truly had the potential to go places but somehow never materialized their music through a record label. The “Spellbound” E.P holds 4 remastered songs of their early 90's set, phasing classic HardRock and Metal with NWOBHM and very early style SpeedMetal. The band rips it up right from the start with the NWOBHM riffed speedster “Spellbound”; a most energetic outing that is power injected by the muscular vocal roar of female shouter Cecilia that moves somewhere in between Mark Briody (Jag Panzer) and Leather Leone (Chastain). On it goes with “Save Us”; a slow burner with grinding guitars and an anthemic chorus; a thing that comes re-appearing on “We Are The Blessed”; a meaty, grooved-up 90's Hardrocker with accelerations and an all 80's, 'fist in the air' Metal chant. The E.P concludes with a Moth adaptation of the Deep Purple classic “Speed King”; a hommage to the earliest formats of HardRockin' SpeedMetal. Focal point throughout the E.P are the hard as nails vocals of Cecilia with a 'hall of fame' performance that is further upped by the power-punch production. Great Paul van der Burght
specs: comes in both 'vinyl' CD version and limited edition gold cassette with full colour 16 page A6 booklet, available via the Manic Mosh Metal webshop. Stream and direct download via the Moth bandcamp link.

BITCHHAMMER – 2019 “Offenders Of The Faith”
label: Iron Shield records
songs: Funeral Sorcery / Satanic Violence / Satanica / Fear No Evil / Into The Filth / To Hell With The Cross / Pentagram Vibes / Bitchcraft / Blasphemaniac //
web: www.facebook.com/raging.hell.rivers/
Germany's Bitchhammer have been around for quite some time (2008) but did not manage to strike gold yet. That is about to change, having inked a deal with Iron Shield records and stepping up the competition with one devastating album that will mercilessly crush any competitors in the Blackened Thrash genre. Think a mix of Bathory and the early Celtic Frost stuff with over-the-top, intense vocals that are screamy, gruff and talk type with the occasional hint of Tom Warrior (Celtic Frost) in there. This is the type of voice that reminds a lot of 90's Tampa style DeathMetal / DeathThrash bands, and Bitchhammer has the concept matching this on the rhythm riffed “Satanic Violence” and the bobbing up-tempo cruncher “Satanica”. The double-bass fuelled “Fear No Evil” is among the most versatile tracks, gelling 90's (Tampa style) DeathMetal with the sounds of old a la Venom and Bathory. The concept is taken further with some BlackMetal features surfacing on “Pentagram Vibes” whilst the double-bass injected “To Hell With The Cross” reveals some Slayer esque features in the back. The production of this thing is perfect for the genre and triggers this raw,'plug in and play' feel with a cool, 'plopping' bass sound that nicely sits in the mix. Overall performance is tight and hard as nails with some great, energetic drummage. Excellent! Paul van der Burght

BEASTMAKER – E.P 2019 “Eye Of The Storm”
label: private
songs: Eye Of The Storm /Shadows / My Only Wish / Celestial Glow //
web: https://beastmaker.bandcamp.com/
California based three piece that have released a whole string of E.P's over the years. This is their latest one that have this classic, Scandinavian twist to its original, Doom-tinged concept. Opening tune, the slow-paced “Eye Of The Storm” testifies to this, phasing melodic laden Doom with chants a la Heavy Load whilst still retaining this modern sounding undertone. “Shadows” accents the melodic element and comes with lots of harmonized guitars. “My Only Wish” is more of a NWOTHM styled arrangement coupling NWOBHM to Doom. Closing piece “Celestial Glow” is a chunky, mid-paced offering with a classic, 70's Doom root. Beastmaker works a lot with vocal harmonies in the mid-range, occasionally clicking with Katatonia. This is one well structured, subtle and entertaining affair with some nice, balanced gutarwork throughout Cool. Paul van der Burght

RIOT CITY – 2019 “Burn The Night”
label: No Remorse records
web: https://www.facebook.com/RIOTCITYOFFICIAL
First album by this Canadian mob that have raised the bar for NWOBHM. Riot City are a band to be reckoned with and “Burn The Night” testifies to this. Housed in an all 80's sleeve, this thing just oozes all 80's Power / Metal that collects the sounds of Omen, Griffin, Liege Lord, Savage Grace, and more traditional acts such as Priest, Maiden and Accept. The set hosts various interpretations to the theme, from Epic (edged) PowerMetal (“Warrior Of Time”, “The Hunter”), and classic, double bass drummed U.S SpeedMetal (“Burn The Night”, “Steel Rider”) to melodic edged Metal / Power (“329”) and riff-gripped Euro Metal as evidenced on the Accept-ish semi-Headbanger “Livin' Fast”. The album holds a lot of double bass drummed chops and comes loaded with a lot of guitar that lay the basis for the rough, yet melodic edged upper-range vocals of star singer / guitarist Cale Savy that has a match-made voice for any of the displayed styles, peppered with some pure (not falsetto) siren yells. Songs are energetic and entertain from the very start. Performance is most professional and tight with some great drummage running underneath; this thing simply has got it all. “Burn The Night” clearly makes one of the better NWOTHM albums released over the last few years, and where fellow Maple Leaf Metalers Striker already paved the way, Riot City have now indefinitely put Canada on the map as the new force of NWOTHM. Excellent! Paul van der Burght

WEAPONLORD - single 2019 “Dive”
label: private web: https://weaponlord.bandcamp.com/ Although this single is newly released, the song (written over 6 years ago) originally stems from a previous band called Arsenal featuring three of the current Weaponlord members and bassist Ian Alkire who sadly passed away this year. The song - which is dedicated to Ian – has 80's U.S Metal all over it and sounds like the early generation U.S bands such as Myth, Assassin and Attila, sourcing from Euro-Metal, Priest in particular, sporting a similar, propelling riff-drum tandem and lots of guitar solos throughout. The vocalage is rough and talk-type with a melodic edged vibrato and goes up in pitch towards the end, peaking in a siren-yell modus. Solid! Paul van der Burght |
TYTUS – 2019 “Rain After Drought”
label: Fighter records
songs: Disobey / The Invisible / The Storm That Kill Us All / Our Time Is Now / The Dark Wave / Death Throes / Rain After Drought pt.I / Rain After Drought pt.II / Move On Over / A Desolate Shell Of A Man //
web: https://tytusband.bandcamp.com http://www.tytus.it/
Second full-lengther by this Italian 4-piece showcasing a melange of Metal, Power and SpeedMetal with the occasional hint of Thrash. The album spins off with the high octane, 80's style Speedster “Disobey” gelling the likes of Agent Steel, Savage Grace and even Megadeth in a far distance. The Thrash thing is presented on the Thrashed up melodic Metaler “The Invisible” and the mid-paced “Our Time Is Now” that has the Megadeth flavour resurfacing in its opening theme. More SpeedMetal is fired up in a melodic European fashion with “Move On Over” and follows through without the speed element on the classic up-tempo Metaler “The Storm That Kill Us All” that is laced with melodic / harmonized leads. Power-meets-SpeedMetal on the rhythm riffed Headbanger “The Dark Wave” with its NWOBHM inspired guitars; a twist that is repeated on the lightly Maiden peppered instrumental “Rain After Drought pt.I”.And then there's the classic HardRock groovsters “Rain After Drought pt.II” and “A Desolate Shell Of A Man”. The album stands tall in songwriting, diversity and delivery and is showered with explosive guitar action. The vocals add to the melodic edge but equally operate in a roughened modus. This album holds all the essentials to rank itself among the better picks of 2019. Great! Paul van der Burght

TORPEDO – 2019 “Rocking Hard”
label: Dying Victims productions
songs: Live For The Night / Flaming Steel / Heavy Rocker / Loud And Raw / City Streets / Creeper / Rocking Hard //
web: https://dyingvictimsproductions.bandcamp.com/album/torpedo-rocking-hard
Tasmanian 2-piece project that previously released the demos “Torpedo Metal” (2016) and “Flaming Steel Attack”. (2017). This release partners both demos that deliver some unpretentious and unpolished SpeedMetal exactly the way it was done back in the day. This comes complete with a rehearsal / 'basement' style production and the occasional HardRock sourcing, be it in minimal quantities, as heard on the European sounding “Flaming Steel” and “Rocking Hard”. Overall, the concept of Torpedo is a European – U.S. SpeedMetal get-together, that tips over to the U.S sound, phasing likes of Savage Grace, Griffin and - in particular – Abattoir (“Creeper”). The music has a light melodic undertone a la French / Swedish Metal – SpeedMetal, and the non-roughened, semi upper mid-range vocals add to this, but would be better off with more of a roar or bite as they are not pitch perfect and quite distinctive / unusual in tone. Some funky falsetto shrieks and siren yells though. The solos are basic and could do with some more flash. However, putting it all together, performance and concept wise, it works. Torpedo just has this honest and pure Underground feel to it that has 80's Speed written all over. It is not always about perfection to make things tick, and Torpedo proves this right here. STARBREAKER – 2019 “Dysphoria”
label: Frontiers records
songs: Pure Evil / Wild Butterflies / Last December / How Many More Goodbyes / Beautiful One / Dysphoria / My Heart Belongs To You / Fire Away / Bright Star Blind Me / Starbreaker //
web: https://www.facebook.com/starbreakerofficial/
The third Starbreaker album - featuring singer extraordinaire Tony Harnell (TNT) and guitarist Magnus Karlsson (Primal Fear) as the powerhouse tandem of the band – is a spectacular piece of music that gives the classic A.O.R genre a complete make-over with 2 simple steps; diversify and intensify whilst maintaining the desired melodic feel and appearance. The result is a concept that comes out quite heavy in places, as evidenced on the album's heaviest offering; “Pure Evil”; a double-bass drummed 80's Headbanger that has melodic Euro / Swedish Metal splashed all over. Straight after, the band takes on 80's A.O.R with “Wild Butterflies” that sounds like a beefed up Journey; a trick that is repeated on the semi ballad “Last December”. A more Poppy U.S Radio Rock approach is the root of the mid-paced “How Many More Goodbyes”. Yet another twist in concept is brought in by the toe-tapping, A.O.R – melodic Metal phased titletrack and “Fire Away” which slightly tends towards the HardRock thing. A more modern approach is displayed on the symphonic Metaler “My Heart Belongs To You” and the Mainstream Goth edged “Bright Star Blind Me”. The allround diversity of this album is crowned with a melodic Metal version of the Priest classic “Starbreaker” that comes with a slight hint of Saxon. There's a modest use of synths down the material that is caked with – for the genre – quite heavy guitars and riffage. Some great guitar flash is presented on “My Heart Belongs To You” but star of the show is singer Tony Harnell, delivering a superb, upper range vocal tone and reach that peaks on “Beatiful One” and “Dysphoria”. If one is to define the current style of Starbreaker, picture a mix of Journey and TNT with a hint of Impellitteri. With this album, Starbreaker have redefined A.O.R and bumped it out of its many cliches. Fantastic. Paul van der Burght

GATEKEEPER – E.P 2019 “Grey Maiden”
label: Cruz Del Sur music
songs: Grey Maiden / Tale Of Twins / Moss / Richard III //
web: https://gatekeeper.bandcamp.com/
Four song affair that continues the concept of the 2018 “East Of Sun” album with the Epic Metal sound now being taken even further. The band has amazingly done so by incorporating a daring but really cool 'interlude', “Moss” featuring Medieval style vocals, acoustic guitar and violin! Opening track “Grey Maiden” has NWOTHM all over it and merges the Epic Metal thing with a slight Progressive instrumentation that hints at Brocas Helm. The moderately / mid-paced “Tale Of Twins” has a more dramatic setting with Medieval chants and twin guitar melodies. The band's cover of “Richard III” (originally by NWOBHM act Tradegar) is a polished up Epic Metal gem that comes with an extended solo-section and lots of twin harmonies that click with Virtue. Material is further lifted by its variable themes, subtlety and niche for proportion. This is a very fine slab of Epic Metal that ticks all the boxes and more! Paul van der Burght

STEEL NIGHT – 2019 “Fight Till The End”
label: Iron Shield records
songs: We Are Metal / Run For Your Life / Spell Witch / Red Alert / Heavy Metal Storm / Fight Till The End / You Lost My Heart / Wings Of Steel / Made Of Steel (live) //
web: https://www.facebook.com/SteelNightOfficialMx/
Debut full-lenghter that continues on the 80's sourcing as evidenced straight from the opening tunes of “We Are Metal”; a slow, bobbing 80's Metaler that moves somewhere in between Dio, Warlord and Breaker (Cnd) with light Epic undertones and an Anthemic refrain before it gets showered with Maiden style harmonies as it accelerates. “Run For Your Life” finds the band addressing to early 80's SpeedMetal Swedish style with a melodic edge. The band repeats the Headbang modus two more times, respectively on “Heavy Metal Storm” and the European mould “Wings Of Steel”. Steel Night largely borrows from Omen (and Maiden) on the mid-paced “Spell Witch”, and Accept on the 'live' track “Made Of Steel”; a classic HardRock / Metaler that, completely in 80's tradition features exaggerated live audience sounds. The vocalage sort of 'differs' per song and goes from a lower mid-range to an upper mid-range tone and additionally features some nice falsetto / siren yells. There's a lot of Maiden esque melodies and guitar sounds (including feedback and style) to be found throughout the disc, most prominently appearing on “Spell Witch” and the opening tunes of the NWOTHM styled “Red Alert”. The overall performance holds back a bit, making it sound a little 'careful', but equally it sort of suits the neat, melodic edged nature of the concept. Putting it all together, “Fight Till The End” holds all the ingredients of a decent NWOTHM release with some nice guitar action, a good allround diversity and a solid entertainment value. Enjoyable. CHALLENGER – MCD 2019 “Turned To Dust”
label: Dying Victims productions
songs: Left Alive / Turned To Dust / A Place Of Tranquility / Challenger //
web: https://www.facebook.com/challengerslo/
First documented material by this NWOTHM act that musically moves somewhere in between Warlord, Savatage and Manilla Road, engaging a brand of Progressive edged Metal / Speed that is largely riff-oriented and dressed with lots of harmonized leads and guitar melodies. The band has a way of producing a melodic sound without the use of synths which adds to the pure character of the music. The melodic element finds its expression in the guitar department and the crisp, mid-range vocalage that has an Epic / Progressive flair to it with some high pitched shrieks in the Savatage vein on “Left Alive” and “Turned To Dust”. Songs go through various timing and melody changes with some good mobility drummage but are never overdone in technicality, peaking on “A Place Of Tranquility”, partnering a rhythmic mid-tempo with melodic Power / SpeedMetal U.S Style. The Epic vibe is omnipresent but same as for technicality, it does not overrule and comes in several variations including chord-riffed, Progressive (semi) SpeedMetal as heard on “Challenger”. In all, a fresh and well balanced approach to a variety of musical adaptations within the NWOTHM genre. Nice. Paul van der Burght

IRON FIRE – 2019 “Beyond The Void”
label: Crime records
songs:Intro / Beyond The Void / Final Warning / Cold Chains Of The North / Wrong Turn / Bones And Gasoline / Old Habits Die Hard / Judgement Day / To Hell And Back / One More Bullet / The Devils Path / Out Of Nowhere //
web: https://www.facebook.com/ironfiredk/
Newest outing by this Danish 3-piece that once more hosts a varied array of styles and interpretations but has now chucked the connections with Thrash (as present on their previous album) and incorporated more of the melodic SpeedMetal thing that, in combination with the prominent PowerMetal sound brings up comparisons to Helloween and Impellitteri, as evidenced on opening tune “Beyond The Void” and the high octane, double bass driven “To Hell And Back”. The diversity is brought in by Anthemic modes and / or chants down “Cold Chains Of The North” and the shout along Power balladry of “Judgement Day”. Another swing in concept comes in the shape of the HardRock rooted “One More Bullet” and the up-tempo Euro Metaler “Wrong Turn”. The vocalage easily adapts to any of the portrayed styles, delivering a deep, lower toned roar. The band works a lot with a combination of (moderately) fast – slow tempos with some propelling modes thrown in “Final Warning” and “Bones And Gasoline”. Add to this some sticky themes, catchy vibes, 'meaty' guitars and a power-punch production and the result is one very complete and entertaining album that makes it all fit. Strong Paul van der Burght

RUTHLESS – 2019 “Evil Within”
label: Pure Steel records
web: www.ruthlessmetal.com/
Newest album after the band's 2015 comeback album “They Rise”. With “Evil Within”, U.S PowerMetal veterans Ruthless keep the tradition of their 80's released “Metal Without Mercy” and “Discipline Of Steel” discs alive, featuring a brand of mid to up-tempo driven U.S PowerMetal that is chunky and grinding, splashed with a good lot of double bass drummed hooks and harmonized guitar leads. Songs are riff-based and fairly straight forward, allowing easy access, particularly partnered with bobbing drives of tunes such as “Fear Never Sleeps” and “The Brotherhood”. As with the previous album, there's clicks with Overkill, as evidenced on the mid-paced “Skulls” and the slightly Thrash tinged “Atrocities”; a thing that comes re-surfacing on the mid / up-tempo “Death March”, pushing the boundaries of PowerMetal. In the centre of attention is the muscular vocal roar of original singer Sammy DeJohn, spicing the material in true PowerMetal fashion. Entertaining Paul van der Burght
RAVENSIRE – 2019 “A Stone Engraved In Red”
label: Cruz Del Sur music
songs: Carnage At Karnag / Thieves Of Pleasure / Gabriel Lies Sleeping / Dawning In Darkness / Bloodsoaked Fields / After The Battle / The Smiting God / The Games Of Titus //
web: https://www.facebook.com/Ravensire
All new album and the first one to feature the new line up with guitarist Mario and drummer Alex to join original members Nuno (guitar) and Rick (bass / vocals). The musical concept of previous works is still intact but has further matured in song-writing and overall appearance, making “A Stone Engraved In Red” their most complete work to date. This all comes together on the multi-themed “After The Battle Battle”; a worthy tribute to Manilla Road leader Mark “The Shark” Shelton. It is also here that the band incorporates just a hint of light format Doom; a feature that is also present on the galloping, up-tempo Metaler “Gabriel Lies Sleeping”. A nice twist is the Folk / Celtic opening of “The Games Of Titus”, sporting acoustic guitar and narrative vocals before morphing into an all out Epic Metaler with a bobbing rhythm and harmonized guitar melodies. Songs are mainly moderately to mid-paced gearing to an up-tempo on “Gabriel Lies Sleeping” (and a fragment on “The Games Of Titus”) and accelerating on “After The Battle” and “The Smiting God”. “A Stone Engraved In Red” is a worthy collection of subtle, melodic laden Epic Metal in the 80's tradition that occasionally leans towards (mild) PowerMetal. Think a mix of Maiden, Omen and Manowar with the Anthemic thing pushed forward on “Dawning In Darkness”. All the instruments and elements are in place and well proportioned, peppered with the distinctive vocal roar of singer / bassist Rik. Pleasant. Paul van der Burght

FIND ME – 2019 “Angel In Blue”
label: Frontiers records
songs: No Tears In Paradise / Chain Of Love / True Believer / Straight For Eternity / Can't Let Go / One Last Kiss / Living A Lie / Angel In Blue / Show Me What You'd Die For / Waiting For A Lifetime / You Are The Only One / Desperate Dreams / Only The Lonely //
web: https://www.facebook.com/FindMeBandOfficial/
Whole collection of traditional, 80's Radio Rock American style. This goes from melodic HardRock / A.O.R (“No Tears In Paradise”) and Symphonic PompRock (“Chain Of Love”, “Living A Lie”) to seemingly Journey inspired 'chart Rockers' such as the Poppy esque “True Believer” and the up-tempo “Straight For Eternity”. Heaviest tune comes in the shape of the catchy titletrack, whilst the piano laden balladry of “One Last Kiss” sits at the other end of the spectrum. There's synths usage throughout the whole of the set, adding up this broad and full sound that is dressed with mid range vocals and the occasional high notes and rough edge. Apart from the slow balladry, material is either mid or up-tempo with an easy going vibe and instant access. Strong. Paul van der Burght

TIR – 2019 “Metal Shock”
label: Gates Of Hell records
web: https://www.facebook.com/TIR-Heavy-Metal136007413130869
TIR were one of the many obscure Italian Metal acts from the early 80's that got picked up by the Underground tape-trading and fanzine scene but never materialized any vinyl in those days apart from an appearance on the “Metallo Italia” compilation ('85). In 2011 TIR launched their debut album and have come back full force with the monumental “Metal Shock”. This one takes you right back to the sound of mid 80's Euro-Metal caked with a crystal clear, beefy production of the modern day. TIR offers a varied palette of songs, including double bass drummed Headbangers (2x), Bluesy HardRock, classic HardRock and phased HardRock / Metal. In addition, there's a Rock ballad-turns-Headbanger (“La Sfida”) and a cool, acoustic guitar piece (“Memoria”). Vocals perfectly suit the music with a natural muscle, some higher pitched yells and a slight melodic touch that also attributes to the guitars department and the music as a whole. There's plenty of double bass drummed chops throughout and the songs come loaded with guitar harmonies. The performance shows the years of experience and the whole thing is delivered with a lot of energy and catchy vibes. “Metal Shock” is one great, retrospect type HardRock / Metal album that entertains from start to finish.

Chevalier – 2019 “Destiny Calls”
label: Gates Of Hell records
songs: Introduction / The Immurement / The Curse Of The Dead Star / Road Of Light / ...As The Clouds Gather / Stormbringer / In The Grip Of Night / Prelude To The End / A Warrior's Lament //
With 2 releases out, Chevalier already managed to become a regular name in NWOTHM territories, largely addressing to the classic Metal / SpeedMetal sound with a different appearance on both outlets. With “Destiny Calls”, the band has once more given their concept a swing with increased technicality and touches upon U.S. Doom on the Tyrant – meets – Hyksos tinged “The Curse of The Dead Star”. The technical element is most evident on the multi-paced “Stormbringer” which also captures one of the fastest moments on the disc. The band turns towards Epic Metal on the rhythmic “Road Of Light” that features some nice, climaxing guitar action. The whole thing is dressed with the upper mid-range vocals of singer Emma that click with Kim La Chance (Malisha, Vixen,) on more than one occasion and comes complete with a good lot of siren yells. There's a lot happening within the music but 'overplayed' at times, doing too much, particularly in the drum department. Partnering this to a thin production, it actually limits the material. The less is more principle would make a better option here. This is a decent release but it doesn't equal the quality of the 2018 “Chapitre II” release.

ASGRAUW – 2019 “Gronspech”
label: Heidens Hart records
songs: Pletsmajoor / Wolvenbloed / Sgoer / Duuvelsberreg / Kiste Trui / Duitenpact / Gelgehei / Zwotte Ruine / Grafwegen //
web: https://www.facebook.com/Asgrauw/
Third and newest outlet by this Dutch act , addressing to some atmospheric BlackMetal that is caked with Gothic moods on the synths layered “Pletsmajoor” and Nordic touches on “Duuvelsberreg” and the narrtive voiced ,atmospheric laden “Kiste Trui”. In addition, there's blends of HardCore PunkMetal, phased with Nordic BlackMetal on songs such as “Wolvenbloed” and “Sgoer” that in a far distance bring up Warfare. Shades of Celtic Frost pop up on “Gelgenhei”, whilst “Duitenpad” counts as the most catchy offering, rolling on double bass drummed hooks. Overall, there is quite a lot of double-bass drum usage but it is the guitars that are the most prominent, both in proportion and in the mix. The synthesiser is there on quite a few occasions but only highlights on “Pletsmajoor”; other times it simply runs underneath to thicken the sound and atmosphere. The vocals are raw and raspy with some one-off, regular voiced modes. The whole thing is predominantly Nordic BlackMetal oriented and sounds remarkably neat and clean for the genre, even when it gets to the more HardCore tinged moments. In this regard, this album lacks a 'raw' edge but this simply is one well-played and neat interpretation of the genre(s) which works really well with a good, all round catchy vibe. Cool.

BANDIT – 2019 “Stand And Deliver”
label: Dying Victims productions
songs: Curse Of The Skeleton / I'm Gonna Steal Your Girlfriend / Rat king / King Of The Night / Stand And Deliver / Get Nuked //
web: https://www.facebook.com/Banditmetal666/
Debut Solo release of Finnish one-man band Bandit featuring 'Bitchlord' from Terror Cross. This things is stickered as 'Blackened Speed Metal' and does so by addressing to the earliest incarnations of the genre. This comes with a fairly omnipresent, 80's HardCore edge that finds its expression in the guitar chords, provocative – talk type vocal style and allround attitude. Think a mix of Venom and Warfare that is hard, fast and 'dirty', voiced with a vocal tone that has Cronos (Venom) all over it. A cool twist in concept comes in the shape of Hammond organ simulation down the gripping, HardRock / HardCore phased “Rat King” that sounds as if it is taken straight off Warfare's setlist. The HardCore element is taken even further on the Punk / HardCore tinged “Stand And Deliver” and “King Of The Night” that turns towards early BlackMetal towards the end. Songs are straight forward, raw and energetic with compact, instant-access themes and a head bobbing vibe. Cool. Paul van der Burght

METALL – 2019 “Metal Fire”
label: Iron Shield records
web: www.metall-heavyband.de
German outfit that have been around ever since the early 80's but never got to materialize a full lengther until 2017 (“Metalheads”). “Metal Fire” is their newest work, capturing the (Power) Metal sound of the 90's with the occasional 80's root being pushed forward on a few occasions, most prominently on the Euro-Headbangers “Metal Maniacs”, “Stay For A Night To Pray” and the up-tempo “Metal For You”. The band goes full into 90's PowerMetal tending towards Thrash on the majority of tracks, gelling the likes of Metal Church and Pantera, the latter which is pushed forward on the pounding, grooved up PowerMetaler “Master Key” that borrows largely from Pantera's “Walk”. The vocalage on the disc is variable in a mid-range tone with a good, muscular roar and are taken to completely different levels twice, if only briefly adopting gruntage (“Hold The Line”) and this BlackMetal rasp (to alternate the Metal roar on “Beneath My Mind”), strongly contrasting with the more melodic PowerMetal delivery on “Stay For A Night..”). Songs are easy going and chunky with a solid wall of crunchy guitars. This album entertains in an unpretentious fashion with a good lot of bobbing themes. Cool. Paul van der Burght

DEMON HEAD – 2019 “Hellfire Ocean Void
label: Svart records
songs: Rumours / The Night Is Yours / A Flaming Sea / In The Hour Of The Wolf / Labyrinth / Strange Eggs / Death's Solitude / Mercury & Sulphur //
web: https://demonhead.bandcamp.com/
Newest work by this Danist unit, delivering a brand of dark, dramatic Rock that borrows from Goth, Doom and Metal with additional blends of Folk and the Ambient thing. The album moves in various ways, taking bits and pieces from all of these styles and matching in in a modest manner. Songs that stick out are “In The Hour Of The Wolf” (sounding much like Heavy Load phased with almost Poppy, modern DeathMetal without the distortion!), and “Strange Eggs” that sounds like a Rock version of MF Fate / King Diamond, complete with a similar vocal style, be it in a lower tone and without the falsettos. Most in-depth offering is the atmospheric Celtic / Folk phased “Death's Solitude” featuring various moods and modes. Guitars are gained, not distorted, and feature a lot of acoustic hooks to compliment the Folk thing, as evidenced on the Ancient styled “Labyrinth”. Vocalage is of a mid-range with different appearances and the occasional hint of Danzig. Demon Head may be a bit mellow for Metal but the package definitely works in more atmospheric / Ambient territories. Cool and different. Paul van der Burght

SPIRITS OF FIRE – 2019 “Spirits Of Fire”
label: Frontiers records
songs: Light Speed Marching / Temple Of The Soul / All Comes Together / Spirits Of Fire / It’s Everywhere / A Game / Stand And Fight / Meet Your End / Never To Return / The Path / Alone In The Darkness //
web: https://www.facebook.com/SpiritsOfFireBand/
New, all star-band featuring veteran musicians that formerly played in class-acts such as Warlord, Fates Warning, Warlord, Savatage and Testament. The 'face' of the music is no other than ex Judas Priest / Iced Earth shouter Tim 'Ripper' Owens, voicing the material in a Priest-styled fashion, apparent from the very first notes of opening tune “Light Speed Marching” that clicks at large with Priest's “Turbo Lover”. Overall, the set gels the classic Metal sound with the 90's American interpretation that tips over to PowerMetal on multiple occasions such as the chunky, mid-paced “It's Everywhere”, the pounding “”Meet Your End”, and the Pantera – meets classic Accept styled titletrack. More of the Pantera thing comes surfacing on the Industrial infused 90's Metaler “Temple Of The Soul” whilst the Priest sound is all over the largely guitar oriented “All Comes Together” and the pounding Headbanger “Stand And Fight”. More diversity is brought in by a power-ballad (“Alone In The Darkness”) and an Anthemic, shout along Euro-Metaler (“Never To Return”). There's synths usage throughout the entire set, but mostly in a fairly unobtrusive way with 'key' notes to thicken the sound. The tip-top musical skill and delivery are all over this set that grips from start to finish and sparks with energy and a whole lot of guitar. Entertaining. Paul van der Burght

WRETCH – 2019 “Man Or Machine”
label: Pure Steel records
songs: Man Or Machine / Destroyer Of Worlds / Schwarzenberg / Steeler / Strike Force One / Requiem Aeternam / The Inquisitor Trilogy Part I: Castle Black / The Inquisitor Trilogy Part II: The Inquisitor / The Inquisitor Trilogy Part III: Fire, Water, Salt and Earth / Man Or Machine (Acoustic) - hidden track //
web: https://www.wretchmetal.com
Newest album that, in comparison to the 2018 “Reborn” re-release from 2006 shows quite a few changes in concept. The Thrash thing has entirely gone and made way for a more melodic approach that couples classic Euro-SpeedMetal and U.S PowerMetal. The European adaptation rules throughout the first half of the set with hints of Helloween popping up on “Man Or Machine” and “Strike Force One”. This comes with a lot of double-bass drummage and melodic guitar hooks, alongside the prominent, vibrato laden lead vocalage that is sung in an all-out U.S PowerMetal modus with a pitch and 'bite' that clicks with Agent Steel on more than one occasion. The second half of the album, from track 6 (“Requiem Aeternam”) onwards, sees the band turning towards mid / late 80's U.S. PowerMetal with a slower, moderate / mid-tempo drive and hints of Breaker down the PowerBallad infused “Requiem Aeternam” and the propelling “The Inquisitor Trilogy Pt III”. There is a lot of double bass drummage throughout the set that is laced with melodic guitar hooks and a lot of balanced flash. Although certain tracks could do with a bit more spark, this is a potent performance with a solid delivery that is further elevated by the deserving lead vocalage. Decent Paul van der Burght

FLOTSAM AND JETSAM – 2019 “The End Of Chaos”
label: AFM records
songs: Prisoner Of Time / Control / Recover / Prepare For Chaos / Slowly Insane / Architects Of Hate / Demolition Man / Unwelcome Surprise / Snake Eye / Survive //
web: http://www.flotsam-and-jetsam.com/
Phoenix based Speedsters Flotsam And Jetsam roared in the 80's with 2 monumental albums; the debut “Doomsday For The Deceiver” (1986) and follow-up “No Place For Disgrace” (1988). Thereafter, the band never really equalled the impact and quality of these releases, until now! Although modernized in concept and approach, the delivery is as superb as three decades ago presenting a set of classic rooted U.S Speed / Thrash Metal with a PowerMetal flair that cuts from the same mould as Vicious Rumours, as evidenced on the up-tempo “Recover”. The whole thing is largely guitar oriented and comes with a whole lot of (propelling) double-bass drums but most of the attention is drawn towards the crisp, melodic laden vocalage of original singer Eric A.K that comes with a lot of muscle and a solid vibrato, all in U.S PowerMetal fashion. The speed is up and intensified on the melodic Thrasher “Control” that just oozes energy and comes with some nice, harmonized leads, Bay Area riffage and superb, ultra-tight drummage; a thing that is repeated without the speed on the bobbing titletrack, and in full Bay Area modus on “Slowly Insane” and “Unwelcome Surprise” that rank among the heaviest / fastest offerings on the disc, along with the lightly Industrial peppered “Architects Of Fear” and the riff-raging SpeedMetaler “Survive” with its modern PowerMetal chant. This album just keeps going track after track and makes for a neck wrecking adrenaline rush. Great! Paul van der Burght

LEATHURBITCH – 2019 “Into The Night”
label: High Roller records
songs: Into The Night / L.U.S.T. / I Want What You Got / Sleaze City / Killing The Silence / I'm Insane / The Search / Killer Instinct //
web: https://leathurbitch.bandcamp.com/releases
Follow-up to the 2018 “Leathur And Lies” MLP that comes with some adjustments in concept and appearance. Musical wise, there's been some all-round fine tuning including an increased melodic undertone to the power-vocals that incorporate shades of Liege Lord and Heathen, merged with Judas Priest and Malice in the upper regions. The whole thing sounds as if the band has settled in nicely with a more balanced appearance, as evidenced on the classic U.S. SpeedMetaler “L.U.S.T” that gels the likes of Agent Steel, Heathen and Savage Grace, showered with some nice guitar chops. The Sleaze element of the MLP has pretty much disappeared from the concept, apart from the chorus of “I Want What You Got” that sits in between mid-paced U.S Metal and rhythm-riffed accelerations. The disc now also features more traditional HardRock / Metal merged riffage, applied on a variety of tracks, including the upbeat “I'm Insane” and the up-tempo “The Search”. The moderately paced “Killer Instinct” hints at classic Euro-Metal with a strong Priest / Malice vibe throughout whilst the double-bass drummed, and all-out 80's SpeedMetaler “Killing The Silence” has more than one similarity to Liege Lord. Fastest track comes in the shape of the rhythm riffed “Killing The Silence” that captures all the goodness of mid-80's U.S SpeedMetal. The nature of the songs is fairly straight forward at first glance, but there's quite a few things happening underneath in terms of melodies and mobility. In all, a most entertaining album that is easy on the ear. Cool. Paul van der Burght

FRENZY – 2019 “Blind Justice”
label: Underground Power records
songs: Blind Justice / From Hell / Killing With A Smile / Save Me / Twilight Of The Sapiens / We Are The Future / Velocity / Mad Ball / Waiting On your Call / Annihilated By My Sound / Shred Or Die //
web: https://frenzymetal.bandcamp.com/
Third outlet by this Spanish outfit delivering a brand of melodic edged, HardRock rooted Heavy Metal that moves somewhere in between Impellitteri, Malmsteen and early Scorpions / MSG. The concept has 80's written all over but occasionally makes the traditional sound jump slightly to the 90's as on the Scorpions meets Zakk Wylde esque HardRocker “Killing With A Smile”. Music sticks together really well and mainly rolls on Instant access and head bobbing themes that make this an easy listening affair whilst there is still plenty of shape shifting going on, although mainly through its guitar melodies. Frenzy hold a winning combination, coupling great, multi-range vocals a la Joe Lynn Turner (Malmsteen) to outstanding guitar work that comes in the shape of melodic lines, in-depth solo chops, neo-classical flash and speed hooks. In addition, the set covers a whole spectrum of tempos and musical adaptations, from speed driven tracks (“Blind Justice”, “Velocity”), anthemic Euro-Rockers (“We Are The Future”) and instrumental play (“Twilight Of The Sapiens”) to classic oriented HardRock, galloping Metal (“Annihilated By My Sound”) and guitar showered upbeat Metal with duelling solo chops and harmonized lines over a double bass drummed drive. In all, a very complete and convincing album that entertains from start to finish. Strong. Paul van der Burght

CHALICE OF AGONY – 2019 “Inglorious Fate
label: private
songs: Empty Paradise / Inglorious Fate / Legion Of Damned / Warrior In The Night / The Jester Dance (Legion Of Damned alternative version) //
web: https://chaliceofagony.bandcamp.com/
Argentinian 4-piece employing some 90's Progressive PowerMetal that couples the American style with Epic edged, Anthemic chants the European way. The Epic element is taken further than just the chorus on the speed-driven, double-bass drummed “Empty Paradise” that comes with a whole lot of guitar. Tending more towards the Euro PowerMetal thing iHelloween style is titeltrack “Inglorious Fate” whilst the galloping, upbeat Metaler “Legion Of Damned” displays some Iron Maiden sourcing in the guitar department. Songs are technical with a good lot of shape shifting without blocking accessibility; a thing that is further complimented by the propelling, double-bass drummed hooks that are amply integrated throughout the disc. Vocalage is deserving and very fitting for the music, delivering a crisp, mid-range tone with a good vibrato and a melodic undertone ,but also comes in a roughened roar on the slow pounder “Warrior In The Night” that sounds somewhat like a technicalized Pantera. Some nice, upper range siren vocalage of guest singer Lobo Heimdall down “The Jester” that rounds things off in a true PowerMetal fashion. Everything on this E.P sticks; from the songwriting to the musicianship that scores straight A's in detail, skill and co-ordination. Great! Paul van der Burght

SEAX – 2019 “Fallout Rituals”
label: Shadow Kingdom records
songs: Fallout / Rituals / Killed By Speed / Bring Down The Beast / Feed The Reaper / Interceptor / Winds Of Atomic Death / Legions Arise / Riders Of The Old World / Born To Live Fast //
web: https://www.facebook.com/seaxmetal/
Newest album that finds the band furthering on the classic SpeedMetal thing and decreasing on the Speed HardCore / Punk element that was frequently integrated by similar bands back in the 80's. By replicating the sound of old, Seax has done so as well, but on this album, there's only 3 moments this comes surfacing; respectively its opening tune, “Rituals” (be it in succession with all-out Speed Metal style rhythm riffage) and more prominently on the bar-riffed “Winds Of Atomic Death” and “Born To Live Fast” that sport this Speed Punk feel and appearance, sounding almost like a live take without any 'polishing'. “Fallout Rituals” is about the fastest thing in SpeedMetal, pushing the boundaries of the genre with breakneck speed rhythm riffs and straight forward drummed drives. The band has a way of merging the European SpeedMetal sound with the U.S interpretation, gelling the likes of Have Mercy, Gravedigger, Iron Angel, Destruction and Agent Steel, whilst the vocals bring in a strong flavour of Onslaught (UK) and the allround attitude and vibe clicks with Canadian cult Speedsters Razor on various occasions, as evidenced on “Killed By Speed” and “Feed The Reaper”. Seax deliver and entertain without the frills, pure and simple. Cool. Paul van der Burght

MIDNIGHT FORCE – 2019 E.P “Restless Blade”
label: Iron Shield records
songs: Medusa / Lost In Time / Restless Blade / Crystal Talon / Midnight Force / Restless Blade / Under Fire //
Re-release of the 2016 “Restless Blade” E.P with 2 added bonus tracks from the “Dunsinane” sessions including a different version of “Restless Blade” and the previously unreleased “Under Fire”; a largely NWOBHM inspired up-tempo Metaler with shades of Persian Risk's “50.000 Stallions” in its opening notes. Some 70's sourced U.S Metal comes surfacing on the lightly Hyksos peppered “Medusa” and “Crystal Talon”. The band turns towards early 80's German HardRock / Metal with the riff-based, mid-tempo driven “Midnight Force” whilst more NWOBHM pops up on “Lost In Time”; one of the 'rawer', straight forward tracks on the disc with a Metal – meets – Punk ish undertone in the early 80's styles. One of the faster and more guitar-oriented offerings of the E.P is the rhythmic, upbeat driven “Restless Blade” that comes in 2 versions here. The whole thing has this unpolished sound and feel, like a 'live' studio take without any overdubs, complimenting the feel of the music. The vocals are quite distinctive in tone and delivery which is not always 100% but is in full form on bonus tracks “Restless Blade” and “Under Fire”, reminding of early Attacker in places. The band has a certain charm with the bare knuckle production and approach of this E.P. However it is the bonus tracks that hit the spot with a cleaner production and solid vocals; It would be interesting to see more of these features come to life with a future release. Cool. TOURNIQUET – 2018 “Gazing At Medusa”
label: Pathogenic records
songs: Sinister Scherzo / Longing For Gondwanaland / Memento Mori / All Good Things Died Here / The Crushing Weight Of Eternity / The Peaceful Beauty Of Brutal Justice / Can't Make Me Hate You / One Foot In Forever / Gazing at Medusa //
web: https://tourniquet.net/
Back in the 90's, U.S outfit Tourniquet peaked in terms of international recognition, and were all over the Underground fanzine scene that praised the band for their in-depth lyrics and musical technicality. Their latest album, “Gazing At Medusa” still holds high the Tourniquet tradition, but finds the band exploring different paths and somewhat 'detechnicalizing' their original sound. The Tourniquet concept is still firmly rooted in 90's U.S. Progressive PowerMetal / Thrash but comes with some cool novelty features, including slow and sludgy modes that lightly touch upon Doom on the King Diamond meets Black Sabbath esque “Momento Mori”. There's more of those dark, gloomy moods layered within the music, repeated on the atmospheric, moderately paced “Longing For Gondwanaland”. For this album, original drummer / co-founder Ted Kirkpatrick and guitarist Aaron Guerra are teamed up with hall of fame musicians, singer Tim 'Ripper' Owens (Priest) and guitarist Chris Poland (Megadeth etc) plus a guest appearance on vocals by drummer extraordinaire Deen Castronovo! (“Gazing At Medusa”). Music is largely riff oriented and variable in tempo with a good lot of structural shape shifting that is pushed up on the more technical minded, Progressive laden “The Crushing Weight Of Eternity”, whilst the songwriting shines in the story like opus that is “Can't Make Me Hate You” that cuts through the soul. The vocals of 'Ripper' Owens perfectly capture the mood of the songs and go through a variety of appearances, including rough and snappy talk type modes (to accommodate the more Thrash type hooks), falsetto peaks, a solid vibrato and a whole lot of 2-toned segments. Quality! Paul van der Burght

MAGICK TOUCH – E.P 2019 “Inside The Cage”
label: private
songs:Blades, Chains, Whips & Fire / Electrick Sorcery / Lost With All Hands / Got To Give It Up / Under The Gun //
web: https://magicktouch.bandcamp.com/
New, 5-song affair by this Norwegian power-trio that have captured their 'magic' live at the Polyfon studio in Bergen, Norway. The nature of the music lends itself perfectly for a 'plug in and play' recording, ripping it up with the meaty, grooved up 90's - meets – classic HardRocker “Lost With All Hands” (with its John Norum esque backbone). The upbeat riff Monster “Under The Gun” has traces of Skid Row, whilst the old-school sourced HardRocker “Electrick Sorcery” somehow reminds of early Kiss. More 70's styled HardRock with a strong Thin Lizzy taste is presented on “Got To Give It Up”, and it all takes another turn towards the 80's HardRock sound on the bobbing “Blades, Chains, Whips & Fire” that makes you almost 'taste' the live atmosphere with its raw feel and plopping bass guitar. Add to this a muscular vocal roar (on 4 of its tracks) and the result is one potent and ballsy HardRock happening. Cool. Paul van der Burght

IMPRECATION – 2019 “Damnatio Ad Bestias
label: Dark Descent records
songs: Temple Of The Foul Spirit / Morbid Crucifixion / Baptized In Satan's Blood / Beasts Of The Infernal Void / Damnatio Ad Bestias / Dagger, Thurible, Altar Of Death / The Shepherd And The Flock / Ageless Of None //
web: www.facebook.com/Imprecation-194725213915960/
Follow-up to the 2013 “Satanae Tenebris Infinita”, delivering some old-school Doom / Death in the 90's tradition. This thing is really intense with its musical brutality peaking on “Baptized In Satan's Blood” and “Beasts Of The Infernal Void”. Music is not just all-fast, but more of a combination of fast, snare-drummed hooks and blast beats that are partnered with slower Doom modes. This makes for quite multi-structured arrangements as evidenced on “Morbid Crucifixion”, tending towards the technical thing on its titletrack. The gruntage is deep and gurgling and lowers the tone of the music together with the deep, down tuned guitars. Overall, the concept on the album moves somewhere in between the classic, Dutch DeathMetal sound and Tampa Style DeathMetal with some Thrash hooks popping up on “Dagger, Thurible, Altar Of Death”. Proper.

GUNFIRE – 2019 “Gunfire”

songs: intro / Hard Steel (EP version) / Thunder Of War (EP version) / Gunfire (EP version) / Wings Of Death (EP version) / Firecult / Gunfire (demo tape) / Thunder Of War (demo tape) / The Sea be Your Grave (demo tape) / Hard Steel (demo tape) / Bloody Way (demo tape) / Winged Horses (demo tape) / Thuder Of War (live 1984) //

Back in the 80's, Gunfire were right there at the height of Italian SpeedMetal that flourished in '84 / '85 and produced a good number of quality bands that enjoyed international Underground recognition. Unfortunately, the Italian SpeedMetal thing never really took off with signings to better known independent labels. As such, these bands remained a mystery to the bigger audience, and the same applies to Gunfire. This album collects songs from the band's early repertoire in both demo and E.P versions ('84). Gunfire sound all-European in the typical Italian fashion; straight-forward, unpretentious and pure with the occasional HardRock root, as witnessed on the mid-paced, Accept sourced “Thunder Of War” . More of the Accept thing comes surfacing on the power balladry of “The Sea Be Your Grave”. All out 80's Euro-SpeedMetal is thick within the Evil – meets – Acid esque “Hard Steel”, and takes a turn towards accelerated NWOBHM down the Satan flavoured “Gunfire”. Leaning towards U.S Metal is the bobbing mid-paced “Wings Of Death” that comes with some nice solo-actions. Overall, the vocalage adds a light melodic edge to the music, delivering a semi-upper mid-range tone with a modest vibrato. Fastest offering on the disc is the U.S inspired speedster “Firecult” that previously appeared on the '85 “Heavy Metal Made In Italy” compilation and makes comparisons to Savage Grace arise and Exciter. HEXECUTOR – 7” EP FRA'2014 “Hangmen Of Roahzon”
label: Dying Victims records
songs: Hangmen Of Roazhon / Soldiers Of Darkness / Consecrated Slaughter / Napalm Assault //
web:https://www.facebook.com/Hexecutor
Hexecutor are a 4-piece from France that entered the scene in 2012 with the “First Hexecution” demo, and the band quickly built a full catalogue of material including an E.P, a split release, and a full-lengther. Dying Victims records snapped up the band to re-master and re-release their monumental 4-song E.P that was originally released in a micro-press of 300 copies. Although the titletrack is far heavier and tending to classic 'HardCore Thrash Metal', “Hangmen Of Roahzon” clicks at large with Destruction, and sounds like being catapulted back to the mid-80's, pondering on energetic, fast-paced Thrash Metal with gruff, talk-type vocals, speedy rhythm riffage and snare-drummed rhythmics. All of this goodness comes together in “Consegrated Slaughter”; a high-octane Thrasher gelling the likes of Onslaught and Destruction (“Tormentor”) with added features a la PowerLord (opening lead) and Savage Grace's “Bound To Be Free” (drumming). If Hexecutor had released this material back in the 80's, it surely would have made them a serious contender in the Euro-Thrash Metal thing. Even in the now, “Hangmen Of Roahzon” is a brilliant release if only for its retrospective value! Paul van der Burght

HELLFIRE – 2019 “Mania”
label: Ridingeasy records
songs: Warpath / Mania / On The Loose / Born To Burn / Transcending Evil / Lashing Out / Isolator / The Dreamer / Knights Of The Holy / Masochist //
Newest and best release by these U.S traditionalists that up their game with every new release. On offer here is a varied mix of all-out 80's Metal / SpeedMetal that is largely sourced by the NWOBHM thing with frequent shades of Iron Maiden. Songs cover the whole spectrum of tempos; from moderately paced (on the atmospheric, Epic edged “Masochist”) and mid-tempo (on the lightly U.F.O / Hammerhead tinged “On The Loose”) to upbeat NWOBHM (“Knights Of The Holy”) and SpeedMetal NWOBHM style (“Warpath”, “Lashing Out”). Furthermore, the band has incorporated a ballad – turns – Metaler (“Transcending Evil” hinting at Maiden's “Remember Tomorrow”) and surprisingly contrasting, heavier workouts in the shape of the Mosh – meets – Maiden esque titletrack and the fast-slow Bay Area Thrasher “Born To Burn”; some bands may not pull this off but Hellfire sure know how to make it work within their concept that is layered with some cool, mobility drummage and refreshing shape-shifting. Key features throughout the set are the raised roar vocalage and the harmonized leads peaking on the melodic yet rough edged NWOBHM styled “The Dreamer”. Strong. Paul van der Burght

TWISTED TOWER DIRE – 2019 “Wars In The Unknown”
label: No Remorse records
songs: The Thundering / True North / Tear You Apart / Light The Swords On Fire / And The Sharks Came Then / Riding The Fortress / Eons Beyond / A Howl In The Wind / The Beast I Fear / These Ghosts Can Never Leave //
web: https://www.facebook.com/TwistedTowerDire
Newest album by these cult Power Metal veterans that last materialized their work in 2011 with the “Make It Dark” album. “Wars In The Unknown” picks up where the band left it, and spins a fine blend of 90's styled (Euro) PowerMetal with a melodic undertone. The album comes with all the PowerMetal goodness; Anthemic chants (“The Thundering”), galloping drives (“True North”, “The Beast I Fear”), bobbing Metal and a lot of manly Metal moments. The vocals add to the melodic vibe - peaking on the most melodic Metaler, “These Ghosts Can Never Leave” - featuring double sung lead lines and a good vibrato but equally adds some muscle with a rough edged mid-tone. Songs are mostly up-tempo to upbeat and laced with a good lot of double bass drummage and deserving guitarwork. Although the European sourcing is omnipresent, there's moments the U.S PowerMetal is pushed upwards, referring to the driven up-tempo track “The Beast I Fear”. The whole thing sounds textbook and maybe a bit 'clean' in places but that sort of attributes to the quality of this product. Convincing and entertaining all the way through! Paul van der Burght

LACERATION – 2019 “Remnants”
label: Unspeakable Axe records
songs: Realms Of The Unconscious / Self Deprivation / Shadows Of Existence / Exhausted In Form / Bred To Consume / Hobo With A Shotgun / Critical Biopsy / Arise Within / Taphephobia / Shadows Of Existence //
web: https://lacerationbayarea.bandcamp.com/
Bay Area Thrashers that have been around since 2006. This new album holds a selection of the band's back catalogue including demo and unreleased tracks. Although stickered as an 'old school Death / Thrash act, Laceration are more Thrash than anything else. Their format is very intense and reminds of the more extreme Thrash of the mid-late 80's. Think a mix of Slayer, Death Angel and Possessed that is peppered with biting rhythm riffs, fast, snare drummed drives and a lot of double bass chops. Songs are quite long, clocking in over 6 and 7 minutes which makes the frequent shape shifting not (too) technical. The gruff, talk type vocals add the aggression to the music, whilst the great mobility drummage highlights the allround skill and co-ordination. Convincing. Paul van der Burght

SANHEDRIN – 2019 “The Poisoner”
label: Cruz Del Sur music
songs: Meditation (All My Gods Are Gone) / Wind On The Storm / Blood From A Stone / The Poisoner / The Getaway / For The Wicked / Saints And Sinners / In From The Outside //
web: https://www.facebook.com/sanhedrinband/
New 8 song album that continues the classic root of its predecessor but now finds the band toying with a milder format HardRock / Metal that is most prevalent on the heavy balladry of its titletrack, the second half of “The Getaway” and the catchy “In From The Outside”, all of which tend to a more Rock oriented approach. Heavier moments come in the shape of the driven U.S. Metaler “Blood From A Stone” and the bobbing HardRock / Metal fused “Meditation”. Throughout the disc, the crisp upper (mid) range vocals of Erica Stoltz elevate the music and are pretty much in the centre of attention with similarities to Heart showing on several occasions, most noticeable on “Saints And Sinners”. The material is caked with some good, allround guitar work delivering some nice, ad-lib style solo action on the aforementioned track. The whole thing sticks together well and is upped by a catchy, instant access modus. Although this album does not replicate the sound and impact of the debut, the newly explored musical path makes a welcome addition even if it is more Rock-ish in places. Solid. Paul van der Burght

IRON GRIFFIN – 2019 “Curse Of The Sky”
label: Gates Of Hell records
songs: Prelude / Reign Of Thunder / Forgotten Steel / Lost Legion / Curse Of The Sky / Dawn Of Struggle / To The Path Of Glory //
web: https://irongriffin.bandcamp.com/
Newest outing by Oskari Räsänen that sees a change in concept, and with this also comes the switch of a male to a female singer, Maija Tijander, delivering a tone and voice that sits well up in the higher reach and occasionally makes comparisons Heart arise as evidenced on “To The Path Of Glory”. The musical concept now merges 70's ProgRock, Folk and (80's) Epic Metal with a touch upon classic Doom on the first half of the disc that moves in a rather slow to moderate pace which gels nicely with the Epic thing, as showcased on “Forgotten Steel”. A cool twist is the 'slow-motion' galloping modus driving the Manowar esque “Reign Of Thunder” which stands tall as the most Metal minded tune of the set. Second half of the repertoire turns up the 70's thing and spotlights the non-distorted guitar that comes with it. The “Curse Of The Sky” album entertains but may be less appealing to those who dig the previous outing as it is far less Metal and more 70's rooted with a Proggy touch and shades of Folk. Decent.

TRAUMA – 2019 “As The World Dies”
label: Pure Steel records
songs: The Rage / From Here To Hell / As The World Dies / Gun To Your Head / Last Rites / Run For Cover / Asylum / Entropy / Cool Aid / Savage //
web: https://www.traumametal.com
Re-release of the 2018 album by retro U.S Metalers Trauma that moved under the radars of recognition despite having released a worthy album, “Scratch And Scream” in '84. The band released a come-back album, “Rapture And Wrath” in 2015 and has now followed it up with “As The World Dies”; a potent display of 90's styled U.S PowerMetal that comes with all the trimmings, including superb, all-out PowerMetal vocalage courtesy of original Trauma singer Donny Hiller, delivering a muscular, upper mid-range tone with a solid vibrato and siren yells. Strong point throughout the album is the accessibility and energy of its songs, even regarding the fact that the majority of tracks range from slow and grinding tempos (powering the bobbing “Asylum”, the pounding “Entropy” and the first half of “As The World Dies”) to Power balladry (“Last Rites”). The set is accelerated twice on the Euro-Metal sourced Headbanger “Run For Cover” and the propelling, grooved up “Gun To Your Head” that in certain areas may bring Pantera to mind. In all, a complete, diverse and very convincing album with a high entertainment value. Strong. Paul van der Burght

ROTTEN – 2019 “Rotten”
label: Bleed records
songs: Viscera Nebula / Umbilical Cord Of The Purulent Planet / Stellar Echoes From Decomposed Life / Submission To The Rotten Castle / Floating Among The Dead Celestial Bodies / Til Death (Obituary cover)
web: www.facebook.com/deathrotten
Evolving from a host of bands, France based 4-piece Rotten premier with a 6 song album that sounds as if it came straight out of the 90's! This is a collection of brutal, classic rooted DeathMetal in the styles of the Wild Rags records releases. The set is layered with blends of Doom and Hard / Grindcore which are both partnered on the slow-paced 7+ minute “Submission To The Rotten Castle”, and the predominantly DeathMetal oriented “Floating Among The Dead Celestial Bodies” that comes with a technical undertone. The band displays some Tampa style DeathMetal on the propelling slow-fast “Stellar Echoes From Decomposed Life” and dips deeper into the Doom modus in a grinding fashion down the second half of the Obituary cover “Til Death”. The bobbing DeathMetal pounder “Umbilical Cord Of The Purulent Planet” has the Tampa DeathMetal sound re-appearing and features an eerie Doom hook with theatrical vocals. Songs are voiced in a deep, gaspy Death growl that nicely nests on grinding guitar riffs and a good lot of double bass drums. Rotten have this pure, hard as nails sound that is complimented by an overpowered bass guitar and bobbing tempos. Proper old-school Deathmetal that is played properly and delivered with a bite! Steelwings – 2019 “Back”
label: Sliptrick records
songs: My Rock Is Hot / Walk On Water / Nightmare / Death Or Gold / Walk In The Sky/ Rock The Nation / Back On The Road / All Night / Rock My Soul / She Knows What It Takes / Ride On / Won’t Let You Go Away //
web: http://www.steelwings.se/
This is the very same band that was active in the 80's and now returned on the scene with the aptly titled album “Back”. On offer is a brand of classic rooted HardRock with a good lot of Blues sourcing, as evidenced on some four songs, including “My Rock Is Hot” and “Rock The Nation”. Music is unpretentious, straight forward, and mostly rolls on mid to up-tempo drives. The vocals are of a lower mid-range tone and occasionally remind of NWOBHM act Fist, referring to the up-tempo “Back On The Road”, and the Fist / Saxon phased HardRocker “Rock My Soul”. A bit of a mismatch, and of a completely different production, is the U.S Mainstream infused HardRocker “Nightmare”. Overall, the sound / production is not constant, as if to come from different recording sessions. Concept wise, the band moves somewhere in between old Whitesnake, Krokus and early Picture, caked with some nice, ballsy guitar solos. All it needs is some spark, performance and concept wise to make it stand out as it tends to be a bit linear on both accounts.

NEX – 2019 “The World Collapses”
label: private
songs: Introduction To The Silence / Silence / Hate / God / Wide Horizon / Creation of The Future / Ten Tables Of Faith / The Industrial Democracy / Circles //
web: https://nexdeathmetal.bandcamp.com
Newest work by this Polish project, furthering the concept of their 2015 debut “Totalitarian Leader”, offering a collection of incredibly intense music that couples blast beats, power grooves and monster riffs in an all out 90's appearance that borrows from DeathMetal and the Industrial thing, Think a mix of Fear Factory and Obituary caked with deep, gurgling Death grunts and 'meaty' guitars that is further intensified by the power-punch production. The greater part of the set moves in a moderate pace with a good lot of double bass hooks and power grooves to up the diversity flow. This thing rips from start to finish. Decent Paul van der Burght

PUTRID COFFIN – 2019 “Under The Cementery”
label: Australis records
songs: Dark Master / Utopian Tale / Coffin / Flesh Hunter / Ancient Times / Black Vomit Capitalism / Destruction Feeling //
From Chile comes Putrid Coffin, and though this 4-piece may still be clouded in obscurity, they managed to pop out an album that is out there with the best! This is a retro DeathThrash offering that blows away most established Death and BlackMetal bands. This is one relentless slab of extreme music that ruthlessly ploughs through 7 tracks of brutal DeathThrash the way it was played back in the 90's. Chainsaw guitar riffs, snare drummed drives, blast beats and growling death grunts power this thing that gets quite technical edged, with some great mobility drummage, peaking on the fast-paced “Ancient Times”. Some high-low and reversed DeathMetal riffage fuels the blast beat driven “Black Vomit Capitalism” whilst “Flesh Hunter” shows a more Thrashy sourced guitar with an 80's Slayer backbone. This is the shovel to the head in musical brutality. Great! Paul van der Burght
